Learning Outcomes

The student gets acquainted with ethical questions and learns how to observe the ethical demands of the environment and the society in his actions. The student forms a conception of the ethical foundation of the Finnish society and of the social services branch, and structures the orientations of social politics in social services which emerge from the needs of community, society and individuals. The student grasps the ethical principles and procedures of the occupation.

The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

Basic ethical values; individual responsibility, obligations and moral. Values, orientations and the idea of man of the Finnish society, welfare state and the social service branch. Ethical principles of the social services branch. Ethical values and responsibility of an employee. Values, norms and cultural backgrounds of clients.

Lectures, discussions, group assignments, independent study.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student plans, evaluates, explains and develops his own operations (reflection) from the viewpoint of professional ethics in the social services branch, also critically. The student knows how to discuss the ethical problem situations that relate to social services. The student knows how to solve the ethical conflict situations in the work of social services both independently and together with others. The student knows how to operate responsibly and is willing to participate in developing his own branch.

Grade 3-4. The student knows how to analyse his own operations (reflection) from the viewpoint of professional ethics in the social services branch, also critically. The student knows how to deliberate the ethical problem situations that relate to social services both independently and together with others. The student knows how to solve ethical conflict situations in the work of social services together with others. The student knows how to act responsibly.

Grade 1-2: The student is familiar with the values, ethics and idea of man and the principles of occupational ethics that contribute to the work in social services. The student knows how to deliberate with guidance the ethical problem situations that relate to social services. The student is familiar with the ethical responsibility of an occupation in the social services branch.

Assessment Methods

Evaluation based on group assignments and on the activity during the contact hours. Numeric evaluation. Possibility to get a higher grade on exam retake dates.
