Osaamistavoitteet
This course builds upon the competencies developed in Clinical Skills Training 4 and advances students’ ability to provide safe, evidence-based nursing care in mental health and substance abuse contexts. Students will deepen their understanding of therapeutic interaction, trauma-informed care, and preventive approaches in mental health and substance abuse nursing. Practical training takes place in diverse mental health service units. Emphasis is placed on ethical practice, multidisciplinary collaboration, and supporting recovery-oriented care.
Learning Objectives
After completing the course, the student:
Acts responsibly and professionally in mental health care settings, following relevant work culture and guidelines.
Applies advanced principles of patient and occupational safety.
Participates in therapeutic interaction with individuals experiencing mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, and their families.
Recognizes addiction as a disease and understands its impact on individual and family well-being.
Participates in evidence-based and trauma-informed methods in client care and prevention work.
Understands and applies principles of violence prevention and identifies risk factors in client interactions.
Participates in guidance and support for clients and families at different stages of recovery, promoting self-care and coping strategies.
Interprets and applies relevant legislation, ethical standards, and professional principles in mental health and substance abuse care.
Participates in documenting and reporting patient care, reflects critically professional development.

Recognition and management of main mental health disorders and substance abuse phenomena.
Preventive methods in mental health and substance abuse nursing, including brief interventions and violence prevention strategies.

Pass:
The student:
Demonstrates advanced clinical skills in mental health and substance abuse nursing and maintains competence in surgical and perioperative care when applicable.
Provides safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing interventions.
Collaborates effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
Accurately documents and reports care and reflects on professional growth.
Fail:
The student:
Acts unprofessionally or fails to follow guidelines.
Cannot perform required nursing tasks or ensure patient safety.
Does not participate in care planning or patient support.
Fails to document or reflect on practice.

Additional Language-Related Assessment Information:
A separate language agreement will be made with the student, describing methods for supporting Finnish language learning during training.
Language development goals will be defined by an S2 teacher.
Language proficiency level cannot be a reason for failing the practical training period.
