Osaamistavoitteet
Course Description:
Climate change, energy demand and energy independence are key drives to seek alternative renewable fuel to fossil fuel. Biomass and by extension bioenergy has the potential to contribute immensely to the global climate challenges, national energy independence and self-sufficiency at regional or local level. This course will cover how to process biomass into energy and products, covering topics like thermomechanical, chemical and biological transformation of biomass to energy, environmental, legislative and economical aspects.
Students will learn about characterizing biomass, using technologies like combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, biodiesel production and anaerobic digestion, and designing systems for bioheat, biopower, biofuel, and biogas. Students learn to design systems for converting biomass.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- Describe bioenergy operations, including biofuels.
- Develop balances for unit operations in bioenergy systems.
- Design processes for transforming biomass into energy.
