Chemistry in Technology

Structure Type: Study unit
Code: IYTA0311
Type: Compulsory / Professional Studies
Curriculum: YT 2016
Level: Bachelor of Engineering
Year of Study: 1 (2016-2017)
Credits: 5 cr
Responsible Teacher: Stén, Pekka
Language of Instruction: Finnish

Learning Outcomes

Almost all engineers, independently of their field of technology, will at some stage of their career need basic understanding of chemistry. For example, most choices of materials and corrosion prevention require chemical knowledge, as well as use and production of fuels. Acting as a foreperson in production, the engineer will be responsible of occupational safety issues including chemical hazards.

The student becomes familiar with the periodic table of the elements and classification of matter. The student will be aware of the basic concepts of chemistry and is able to solve simple problems on the topics discussed during the course.

The student will understand the importance of chemistry in the real world, and especially for environmental issues. She/he will have the ability to follow and analyse media discussion about current issues including climate change, bio-fuels and state of water bodies. The course aims to help the student to build an understanding about the environmental challenges of the field of technology. Many of the important choices concerning the future of our environment are made by design and production engineers as part of their daily work.

Student's Workload

The total amount of student´s work is 108 h, which contains 56 h of contact studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

Basics of general chemistry including the structure and states of matter, the mole and molar masses, chemical reactions, acids and bases, and electrochemistry. Some essential environmental issues and the chemical processes behind them.
