Studies of mathematics aim at giving the student the mathematical skills they will need in their studies and in their working career after graduation. In most professional subjects, mathematics is needed in various calculations, and the use of mathematical methods requires the understanding of basic mathematical principles. After graduation, the student must be able to apply mathematics in various tasks in their future career, they must be able to understand written professional texts of their field, including mathematical notation, and they must be able to communicate fluently with other professionals working in their field. Any engineer must have some level of understanding of the mathematical methods used in engineering. After graduation, an engineer should have such knowledge of mathematics and physics that they can be considered eligible also abroad, not only in Finland. Almost all the technical problems fall to the gategory of applied physics. The laws of physics are expressed in the notation of mathematics. Because of these facts, both physics and mathematics are vital for engineering studies.
