Learning Outcomes

The student learns the operational mechanism and use of the FPGA circuits and how to use the VHDL language in executing digital applications. The student becomes familiar with the design of programmable system circuits.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Digital Electronics; Microprocessors, Microcontrollers and Interfacing.

Contents

Structure and properties of FPGA circuits, switches, lights and multiplexers, numbers and displays, latches, flip-flops and registers, counters, finite-state machines, implementation of a RAM module. Description of digital systems with VHDL and design of test bench for the simulation of the digital system with VHDL. Use of ModelSim for the simulation of the hardware description of digital systems.

Material provided by the lecturer.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures and laboratory work. The course requires continuous attendance.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is able to execute a complete digital system with FGPA circuits.
Grade 3: The student can independently execute logic implementations with an FGPA circuit.
Grade 1: The student knows the basics of programmable logic circuits.

Assessment Methods

An examination and laboratory reports.
