Learning Outcomes
The student will be introduced to the most common fieldbuses used in the industry. He/She will learn how to create a local, as well as a distributed system using both the internet and a fieldbus network. The student will also learn the technology of industrial Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), how to configurate and program a PLC and how to use it in a fieldbus network.
Student's Workload
81 h, which contains 30 h of scheduled contact studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents
Understand the fieldbuses and how they are classified with respect to the OSI model. The principal characteristics of fieldbuses and Profibus technology, PLC hardware and Simulation. The development environment of the PLC. Programming the PLC. Profibus and ethernet communication using PLC.

Assessment Criteria
Grade 5: The student is able to set up a distributed system sing a fieldbus, such as Profibus.
Grade 3: The student is able to apply the contents of the course and solve the laboratory assignments.
Grade 1: The student can define a fieldbus and understands its characteristics, type and structure. The student has the ability to make a differences between an industrial data network and the internet.

Assignments, laboratory exercises and an examination.
