Learning Outcomes
The goal of this course is to introduce student to fundamental networking concepts and technologies. Student will be familiar with local area network (LAN) services, will master the structured cabling systems and architecture of LANs and will be able to design a LAN. Student will also master the basics of network models like OSI model and TCP/IP network services and protocols. The emphasis is on Local Area Networks. On completion of the course, the student knows the fundamental networking concepts and technologies. Student is familiar with the two major models used to plan and implement networks: OSI and TCP/IP and gains an understanding of the layered and framed approach to networks. Student examines the TCP/IP layers in detail to understand their functions and services. The focus is on physical, data link (Ethernet) and network layers (IP). Student is familiar with local area network (LAN) devices and network addressing schemes, knows the structured cabling systems and architecture of LANs and is be able to design a small LAN. Student can troubleshoot networks with basic command line tools and Wireshark. Laboratory exercises develop the students’ general working life readiness (generic skills). In the laboratory, the student applies theoretical knowledge to practical work. The exercises require analytical thinking and understanding complex systems. The students will develop their communications skills while working in teams.
Student's Workload
81 h, containing 30 h of contact studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.
