Learning Outcomes

Student aquires sufficient enough knowledge of English to succeed in key communication contexts in working life. The student learns to appreciate the implication of language skill and knowledge in engineering English and international dimension at school and in working life. The student appreciates the importance of setting time aside to maintain and develop further the English language.

Student's Workload

Totally 81 h, out of which contact teaching 42 h and independent study 39 h.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Upper Senior School studies completed or Preparatory English.

Contents

Spoken and written text practice, e.g. how to drav up a EuroCV, explain your experience and current education, how to write instructions, messages and telephone conversations, how to explain a work process or a product.

Recommended or Required Reading and Other Learning Resources/Tools

As available on the Moodle and the material handed by the teacher.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Contact teaching based pairwork and teamwork. Completion of independent tasks and assignments. Completion of the minimun active attendence requirement of 75 % in the sessions provided.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is able to communicate fluently, almost without mistakes, both in speech and in writing. S/he has an extensive vocabulary of the field and understands field-specific texts without difficulty.
Grade 3: The student knows the essential vocabulary and understands the texts in the field. S/he is able to participate in a work-related conversation, with occasional mistakes and errors in the speech.
Grade 1: The student knows the basic vocabulary of the field and understands the main points of texts in the field. S/he can follow work discussions and can give a presentation by reading it from the paper.

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment in contact learning sessions, completion of tasks in due time, individual and team work on scale 0-5.
