Learning Outcomes

The student is able to recognize the philosophical and ethical basis for research and development work. The student is able to write a well-grounded research plan. The student is able to use common data collection methods and explain his/her choices. Studies on development work are integrated to the study unit Project Management Competence.

Total work load of the course: 80 h

The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

The relationship between knowledge, science and research/development work. Philosophical approaches to research. Research ethics. Information retrieval and processing. Forming of the theoretical framework of an empirical study/development work. Writing of a research plan. Data collection methods. About development work plan and implementation of a project and working methods: see the study unit Project Management Competence.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is able to
- describe the contents of the most central philosophical and ethical concepts associated with research and development work, and the contents of the most usual methods of data collection, and to apply and explain them in a new context
- describe the content of a research plan, and apply and explain it in some topic

Grade 3: The student is able to
- describe the contents of the most central philosophical and ethical concepts associated with research and development work, the contents of the most usual methods of data collection, but is not able to implement them in a new context
- describe principally the content of a research plan, and implement it in some topic

Grade 1: The student is able to
- name philosophical and ethical concepts associated with research and development work, most usual methods of data collection, but is not able to implement them in a new context
- name the content domains of research plan, but is not able to describe and implement them further

Assessment Methods

Examination 50%. Numeric grading 0-5.
Seminar work 50%. Numeric grading 0-5.
