Learning Outcomes
The student will acquire knowledge of different scientific philosophies and methods for searching and gathering information. The student understands the importance of a methodical and scientific way of working. The student can implement different methods when writing the final thesis.
The student is espected to choose the topic for his/her thesis. During the study unit the student will become familiar with his/her own topic and get to know how the work should be planned and documented.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
The student should have completed most of her/his basic studies and at least the first module of her/his specialized studies.

Contents
Scientific approach, the thesis as a process, planning of the thesis, sources, information in scientific databases, research methods, ethics and plagiarism, compiling forms, analysis and reporting of research results.
Reviewing VAMK guidelines for theses: Outline: Review of the thesis parts; Contents: Introduction, Conclusion, References, Bibliography: Opposition; Maturity Test; Language Correctness, Analysis of the thesis; Written work.
Preparing a timetable and project plan for the thesis and walk through the process. The study period supports students who will begin their thesis or who are early in their process. The project plan must be approved and appointed supervisor. Participation in seminars where students will present and status report on their own work.

Assessment Methods
Active participation in teaching, performed exercises, analysis of the thesis, written work.
Students should participate in the study period, lectures and discussions, as well as make up and present their own project.
