Learning Outcomes

The student will acquire the basic methodology for seeking and analyzing specialized information for writing essays and reports and conducting surveys and research projects typical for bachelor level. The student is able to evaluate the validity and reliability of results.

General and professional basic studies during the first study year.

Contents

Information search and criteria for scientific knowledge. Definition of the research problem. Strategies in research: experiments, survey- and case studies. Qualitative and quantitative research methods. Planning of personal project for final thesis.

Ghauri Pervez and Kjell Grönhaug (2005): Research methods in business studies. A practical guide.
Instructions for the final thesis at Vaasa Polytechnic.

Lectures and report writing, assignments.

Assessment Criteria

1 The student understands some basics of research methodology at bachelor level

3 the student understands well the principles of research methodology at bachelor level and can apply learned issues in practice

5 the student understands excellently the principles of research methodology at bachelor level and can to a great extent apply the learned issues in practice

Assessment Methods

Exam (numerical 0-5). Assigments in information seeking and analysing research reports (Pass-Fail).
