Learning Outcomes

The aim of the course is to develop the professional English skills. The student acquires the vocabulary and the skills required in order to be able to express himself / herself in issues regarding the business world. In addition the student gets the basic skills in business communication and correspondence required in contacts with foreign companies.

The student is familiar with central business concepts and terminology. He / she also recognizes and masters the language register typical for the business world. The student understands the requirements for effective communication in working life.

The courses of Upper Secondary School, passed level test or the course Preparatory English.

Contents

Professional texts, professional terminology, service situations, business letters.

Material provided by the teacher, current texts and articles, dictionaries, radio programmes.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Class meetings and self studies. Oral and written exercises, team work, projects, oral presentations.

Assessment Criteria

1 = the student is able to understand and follow the main idea of a text / conversation in his/her field and and attempts to particpate. The student knows the essential vocabulary of the field.
3 = the student understands, follows and produces text / conversation of his / her field with some inaccuracies. The student knows the common vocabulary within the field.
5= the student communicates without difficulty in topics of her / his field. The student possesses an extensive vocabulary in her/his field and in general. The student is interested in improving her/his skills all the time.

Active participation in class meetings, oral and written exercises, portfolio, exam.
