Learning Outcomes

The student obtains the basic knowledge of converter applications on modern electric drives, for example, the line commutated converter and inverter of a frequency converter. The student understands the principles of the power electronic components as a part of the converter. The student gets familiar with the network effects of converters, such as the generation of overcurrent waves and reactive power. The student can rate the converter for different kinds of loads.

Student's Workload

133 h.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Calculation Methods of Circuits, Transient and Frequency Analysis.

Contents

The function of the power electronic components in converters. The construction and principles of line commutated rectifiers. The function of the gate commutated converters such as inverters and choppers. Harmonic current and voltage, reactive power generated by the converter. Loading capacity of the converter. In the laboratory session of the course the student studies the functions of the converters and conducts practical start up actions.
