Learning Outcomes

The student will know the quantities and units of electrostatics, DC power and magnetism. The student understands electric and magnetic phenomena and knows the behavior of the most usual electrical components. The student knows especially the applications of electromagnetic sensors S/he can calculate problems related to electrostatics, DC power and magnetism. In the laboratory exercises the student learns measuring technology and learns to analyse the measurements results and their reliability. The student is also introduced to measurement and simulation software.

Student's Workload

The total amount of student's work is 81 h, which contains 42 h of contact studies.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Mechanics 1 and 2 or Mechanics 4 cu.

Contents

Coulomb's Law, electric field, electric flux, Gauss's Law, potential, polarisation, matter in electric field, influence and triboelectricity, electric strength, capacitance, electric current, Ohm's law, quantities and components of direct current, Kirchhoff's Law, Magnetic field, Gauss' s law, induction, inductance, magnetic circuit.

Recommended or Required Reading and Other Learning Resources/Tools

Pentti Inkinen, Jukka Tuohi: "Momentti 2, Insinöörifysiikka", Otava.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The relevant theories of physics, together with associated problems and applications, are studied on a course of lectures. In addition, the student will individually solve a number of given homework exercises. Students will also take part in laboratory measurements. The measurements are done in groups of 3 students. Electricity and magnetism 1 can be replaced with Electricity and magnetism 5 cu.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is able to apply creatively the contents of the course.

Grade 3: The student is well-abled to utilize the course contents.

Grade 1: The student knows those subjects of the course, which are necessary for the forthcoming studies and working life.

Assessment Methods

The assessment is based on an examination (90%), homework exercises and laboratory work (10%). A student must solve at least 25 % of the given homework exercises, and (s)he must complete all the associated experiments in the laboratory of Physics.
