Learning Outcomes
The objective of the study unit is to help the student to get an overall picture of the structures of electrical systems and thus to facilitate the student to integrate the details studied later on to be a part of the bigger entity. The student knows the most important components of electrical systems and their functionalities in theory and in practice. The students understands the basic phenomena and laws related to electrical systems. The students learns to make simple electrotechnial connections.

The total amount of student's work is 54 h, which contains 24 h of contact studies.

Contents
Basic components of electrical systems, such as power generation facilities, power transmission and distribution network and various forms of utilisation of electrical power. The most important electrotechnical basic phenomena and operating principles, such as generator (electromagnetic induction), battery (electrochemical reaction), transformer and electric motor (electromagnetic induction), fluoroscent lamp (controlled gas discharge), short circuit and earth fault. Basic laws in electriacl engineering, such as Ohm's law, Joule's law, Coulomb's law, Kirchoff's law, Faraday's law of induction. Three-phase system and its principles used in Finland.

Assessment Criteria
Grade 1: The student knows those subjects of the course, which are necessary for the forthcoming studies and working life.
Grade 3: The student is well-abled to utilize the course contents.
Grade 5: The student is able to apply creatively the contents of the course.
Assessment Methods
The assessment is based on examination. The student must take part in all the associated experiments in the laboratory.
