Learning Outcomes
The student understands how the electrical power systems and electrical devices are protected against different fault situations and what the essential features of different protection relays are. The aim is to be able to choose the most important protection functions and to calculate the setting values for protection relays.
Student's Workload
Total work load of the course 82 h
Scheduled studies 42 h
Autonomous studies 40 h
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.
Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
Studies in the Power Distribution common core theme
Contents
The main topics of the course are short circuit protection of radial, ring and meshed network using non-directional or directional overcurrent relays and distance relays. After the course the student can plan the earth fault protection for neutral isolated and compensated network. The protection of main transformer with primary protectiona and differential current relay, as well as the protection of a synchronous generator also form a part of this course. The technical properties and software tools for setting and monitoring are introduced during practical laboratory exercises with protection models.
Recommended or Required Reading and Other Learning Resources/Tools
Olavi Mäkinen: Relesuojaus (handout).
Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods
Lectures, PC exercises with relay control software and laboratory exercises.
Assessment Criteria
5: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during relay protection independently and combine the knowledge with previously learnt in various context
3: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during relay protection independently.
1: The student is able, with quidance, to utilise the methods learnt during relay protection.
Assessment Methods
Exam 70% and passed laboratory exercises 30%.
