Learning Outcomes

In this project the student will learn independent data acquisition and is introduced to a 110/20kV substation and the properties of the components of a medium voltage network it supplies and how to choose the components. The student learns electro-technical skills required in calculating rated values and fault current values for the design target and applying them in practical design and documentation. The student also learns team working skills, report writing skills and use of office tools and CAD applications.

Student's Workload

Total work load of the course 82 h
Scheduled studies 42 h
Autonomous studies 40 h

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Calculation Methods of Circuits, Computer Aided Electrical Design, study units in the Power Distribution common core theme.

Contents

The following skills and knowledge is applied in the project:
- defining the rated value for the apparatus according to main claim list
- calculating fault currents for the design target using MathCAD
- applying various methods of information retrieval to search required components
- documentation of design target using CAD software
- drawing up an apparatus list with an office application

Recommended or Required Reading and Other Learning Resources/Tools

Material used in study unit of the theme and project related material

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Project control, team work and investigative learning

Assessment Criteria

5: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during power distribution project independently and combine the knowledge with previously learnt in various context
3: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during power distribution project independently.
1: The student is able, with quidance, to utilise the calculation methods learnt during power distribution project.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on the project work and written report in which selection criteria, calculations, apparatus list and main diagram of the substation are presented.
