Learning Outcomes

This course builds upon the competencies developed in Clinical Skills Training 3a & 3b and advances students’ ability to provide safe, evidence-based nursing care in surgical and perioperative settings. Students will deepen their understanding of the surgical patient care process across pre-, intra-, and postoperative phases, while continuing to strengthen clinical decision-making, patient assessment, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Emphasis is placed on aseptic technique, infection prevention, patient safety during invasive procedures, and effective teamwork in operating room environments.



Learning Objectives:

After completing the course, the student:

Acts responsibly and professionally in surgical and/or perioperative care settings, following relevant work culture and guidelines.

Understands and applies the surgical patient care process.

Applies advanced principles of patient and occupational safety, aseptic technique, and infection prevention in surgical environments.

Participates in professional interaction and communication with patients, families, and surgical team members.

When applicabe:

Performs nursing interventions for surgical patients, including preparation, monitoring, and postoperative care, and/or

assists in perioperative tasks such as surgical hand disinfection, sterile gowning, draping, and instrument handling, and/or

participates in supporting anesthesia procedures (local and general) and monitors patient safety, and/or

provides wound care, manages drains, and performs tasks such as suture removal and ostomy care.

Identifies and manages patient safety risks during invasive procedures proactively.

Participates in documenting and reporting patient care.

Contents

Surgical and perioperative nursing principles integrated into clinical practice and/or

pre-, intra-, and postoperative care processes.

Infection prevention and aseptic behavior.

ABCDE protocol for patient assessment in surgical contexts.

Medication administration and preparation for different surgical procedures.

Structured documentation and ethical considerations.

Reflection and evaluation of care outcomes.

Assessment Criteria

Pass:
The student

Demonstrates basic clinical skills in surgical and perioperative nursing.

Provides safe, ethical, and evidence-based nursing interventions.

Collaborates effectively with patients, families, and surgical team members.

Accurately documents and reports care and reflects on professional growth.

Fail:
The student

Acts unprofessionally or fails to follow guidelines.

Cannot perform required surgical nursing tasks or ensure patient safety.

Does not participate in perioperative care or patient support.

Fails to document or reflect on practice.

Additional Language-Related Assessment Information

A separate language agreement will be made with the student, describing methods for supporting Finnish language learning during training.

Language development goals will be defined by an S2 teacher.

Language proficiency level cannot be a reason for failing the practical training period.
