Learning Outcomes

The course aims to develop nursing students’ ability to interact with clients in various social sector environments and to collaborate with third-sector organizations (NGOs) that play an important role in the Finnish health and social service system. Students will learn principles of client interaction and guidance, while gaining practical experience in diverse settings. The course also supports students in practicing Finnish-speaking basic skills at a low threshold during real-life encounters.



Learning Objectives

After completing the course, the student:

Learns to meet and interact with clients in social service contexts and in cooperation with third-sector activities.

Develops skills in professional communication and client guidance.

Understands the role and significance of NGOs in supporting health and social services and how they complement public services.

Practices Finnish-speaking basic skills in authentic situations with low threshold opportunities.

Contents

Alternative implementations, such as:

Visits to different 3rd sector groups and activities

Day activities for people with developmental disabilities

Patient association service points (e.g., OLKA)

Cultural companion activities

Early childhood education events

Independent visits

Voluntary work

Orientation and information sessions

Introduction to associations and their operating principles

Client data security and confidentiality

Reflective diary

Feedback sessions

Assessment Criteria

Pass Criteria: The student:

Participates actively in planned activities and demonstrates professional interaction skills.

Shows understanding of the role of NGOs and third-sector actors in the Finnish health and social service system.

Completes required assignments, including reflection tasks.

Makes an effort to use Finnish-speaking basic skills during interactions.

Fail Criteria: The student:

Does not participate in activities or fails to demonstrate professional interaction.

Shows insufficient understanding of third-sector roles.

Does not complete required assignments.

Further Information

A separate language agreement will be made with the student, describing, among other things, the methods for supporting Finnish language learning during the training.

The goals for the student’s language development will be defined by an S2 (Finnish as a second language) teacher. Student’s language proficiency level cannot be a reason for failing the practical training period.
