Learning Outcomes

This course strengthens Finnish language skills for everyday and work-related communication and introduces topics relevant to culture, society, and professional contexts. After completing the course, students will:

participate actively in routine communication in nursing situations

understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to general knowledge (e.g., environment, culture, society, work)

identify main ideas and details in short everyday nursing texts

write simple health-care related texts and descriptions

use broader vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and key grammatical structures

recognize differences between formal and informal language and apply them appropriately

gain confidence in Finnish communication in social and professional settings



Starting level: A2.2 (CEFR)

Target level: B1.1-B1.2 (CEFR)

Prerequisites: Finnish for Nursing Basics 1-3

Contents

Oral and written communication in everyday and work-life situations

Grammar: past tense forms, conditional, passive voice, verb rections, plural forms, comparison of adjectives and adverbs

Vocabulary: environment, recycling, culture, society, work-life terminology

Formal vs. informal language use

Reading and writing: short texts, emails, simple CV and job application

Spoken Finnish and cultural insights

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Teacher-provided materials.

Assessment Criteria

Grades are based on participation, assignments, and ability to communicate in nursing and everyday contexts:

Satisfactory (1–2): Can manage simple communication; limited fluency and accuracy; writes basic texts.

Good (3–4): Communicates understandably in everyday and work-related situations; applies grammar and vocabulary correctly; writes short texts and simple job-related documents.

Excellent (5): Handles interactions confidently; writes clear and accurate texts; uses varied expressions and grammar fluently; shows interest in Finnish culture and society.
