Learning Outcomes

This course introduces the basics of Finnish language and culture. After completing the course, students will:

understand and use short, simple expressions in everyday situations

introduce themselves and talk briefly about their background, family, and daily life

build vocabulary and apply basic grammatical structures

recognize main features of spoken Finnish and learn cultural norms and practices

pronounce Finnish clearly enough to be understood

Starting level: 0/A1.1

Target level: A1.2–A1.3 (CEFR)

Prerequisites: Finnish 1 or equivalent (A1.1)

Contents

alphabet, numbers, greetings

meeting people and introductions

describing family, home, and routines

shopping, food, and weather

basic sentence structures and questions

cultural insights into Finnish life

Assessment Criteria

Students are evaluated based on participation, assignments, and ability to communicate in simple everyday situations.

Satisfactory (1–2): Can exchange greetings and provide basic information about self; limited ability to converse or write short texts.

Good (3–4): Can manage common everyday situations, use basic grammar correctly, and write brief texts.

Excellent (5): Can actively participate in conversations, use varied expressions, and apply grammar accurately in speech and writing.
