Learning Outcomes

Practical Training in Pediatric, Adolescent, and Geriatric Nursing:

- The student is able to apply evidence-based information on the growth, development, and influencing factors (such as family-centered nursing, diseases, and individual life course challenges) for different age groups – children, adolescents, and the elderly.

- The student gains the skills to support the growth, well-being, and functional ability of individuals and families, and participates in nursing care as part of a multidisciplinary team. The student is able to provide individual- and family-centered guidance, and utilize strength-based and culturally sensitive approaches in nursing care.

- The student is able to apply ethical principles, current legislation, and client- and patient-centered approaches in their work. They are capable of acting responsibly and safely in various nursing situations.

- The student is able to guide clients of different ages and their families in health and medical care matters, and participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care in collaboration with nursing staff.

- The student is able to analyze the client's health problems and health risks, and plan care in accordance with the nursing process, considering the individual's needs.

Student's Workload

Supervised Practical Training in Pediatric, Adolescent, and Geriatric Nursing, 8 credits / 5 weeks / 190 hours (27 hours x 8 credits = 216 hours)

All participants in the practical training are required to have a criminal record check, which will be performed by the supervising teacher. The criminal record certificate must be presented to the supervising teacher at least two weeks before the start of the training. The certificate must be no more than six months old and valid throughout the entire training period. The PAKKI system must have a recorded HYV mark for the criminal record check before the training begins. This applies to both paid and unpaid training in relation to the criminal record.

Vaccination protection must be up to date before the start of the training, in accordance with the Infectious Diseases Act, section 48§.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

The student must have completed the practical training periods for the 1st and 2nd academic years, as well as the supporting theory courses in nursing. In addition, the student is required to have successfully completed the medication management courses: Basic Medication Competence (4 credits) and Strengthening Medication Competence (4 credits), with the grades recorded in the PAKKI system.

The student must also have completed the Nursing Care for Children, Adolescents, and Families course and related workshops, as well as the Home Care and Geriatric Nursing workshops.








Contents

Training Locations:

Three weeks of the practical training are to be completed in various pediatric and adolescent nursing units, such as children's wards and pediatric outpatient clinics, daycare centers, special schools, units for children with developmental disabilities, school and student health services, and in doctor and nurse offices where the clientele includes children, adolescents, and families. The training can also take place in maternity and child health clinics, neonatal care units, or combined prenatal-gynecological wards.

Primary healthcare and social welfare service units, specialized healthcare units, and various private health and social service providers are also suitable for training placements.

Additionally, two weeks of the training will be completed in home care or geriatric nursing units under the guidance of a nurse. Possible training locations include home healthcare, home hospitals, elderly service housing units, and geriatric wards.

Approved Performance
Student:

- understands and can apply ethical principles in nursing practice
- is able to work flexibly in a multidisciplinary team
- is motivated towards nursing
- can make guided independent decisions in patient care
- documents nursing care in accordance with the confidentiality and security requirements of patient records and information
- can administer medication safely and monitor and anticipate its effects
- can assess the health and functional ability of the client/patient and monitor any changes
- can support and guide patients and their relatives
- participates in client/patient-centered nursing care planning, implementation, and evaluation
- performs realistic self-assessment, identifies areas for improvement, and is able to receive feedback
- masters essential research and nursing procedures and uses the necessary tools and equipment safely

Failing Performance
Student:

- does not comply with confidentiality and non-disclosure obligations
- does not follow agreed rules and instructions
- is unable to function in a multidisciplinary team
- has an insufficient knowledge base and makes mistakes in its application, unable to make independent decisions in recurring nursing situations
- the training is unplanned, and the goals of the training or self-assessment are insufficient
- does not recognize their own competencies or areas for development and cannot demonstrate self-direction towards the end of the training period
- is unable to carry out individualized patient care, even with guidance
- is unable to assess the patient's basic vital functions or communicate about them
- documentation is incomplete
- does not know how to administer medication or record it. The entries are unclear and incomplete
- makes multiple errors in medication administration, cannot perform medication calculations, and does not know the most commonly used medications in the unit
- is unable to assess the guiding needs of the patient and their relatives
- does not master key research and nursing procedures or the safe use of the related tools and equipment

Work Placement

Pediatric and Adolescent Nursing (3 weeks):
The student will complete three weeks of practical training in various pediatric and adolescent nursing settings, including pediatric wards, outpatient clinics, daycare centers, special schools, units for children with developmental disabilities, school and student healthcare services, as well as doctor and nurse consultations involving children, adolescents, and families. Other relevant training locations may include maternal and child health clinics, neonatal units, and combined prenatal-gynecological units.

Geriatric Nursing (2 weeks):
The student will spend two weeks in geriatric nursing settings under the supervision of a registered nurse. Suitable training locations include home healthcare services, home hospital care, elderly care housing units, and geriatric wards.

This practical training allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare environments, helping them develop the skills needed to work with different age groups and provide quality care in various healthcare settings.
