Sexual Health and the Expecting Family
Learning Outcomes:

The student is able to promote the sexual health of clients and patients.
The student demonstrates knowledge of the fundamental principles of sexual and reproductive health.
The student is able to apply their knowledge of sexual health when guiding and counselling clients.
The student is familiar with the normal course and monitoring of pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
The student understands the principles of care and support required by mothers, newborns, and families.
The student possesses basic competencies to provide guidance, counselling, and nursing care for clients in reproductive health, utilizing evidence-based knowledge.

Student's Workload

Learning Methods and Student Workload

The total workload is 81 hours, including 19 hours of contact teaching and 62 hours of independent study.

The contact teaching in reproductive health includes three separate workshops (Group A/B division): pelvic examination, assisting in childbirth, and newborn care. Each workshop is 6 hours. Participation in all workshops requires 100% attendance.

Contents

In Reproductive Health (2 ECTS):
- Normal pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period
- The role of maternity care within the healthcare service system
- Nursing care during normal pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period
- Fetal development and the characteristics and care of a healthy newborn

In Sexual Health (1 ECTS):
- Promotion of sexual health
- Basic concepts of sexual health and sexual rights
- Expressions of sexuality across different ages, life stages, and cultures
- Diversity of sexuality and its challenges
- Sexual health as a part of nursing care

Lectures, topic-specific literature, and recent research related to the subject.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Study Methods and Student Workload

The total workload is 81 hours, including 19 hours of contact teaching and 81 hours of independent study.

The contact teaching in reproductive health includes three different workshops, divided into A/B groups (external examination, assisting in childbirth, and newborn care). 6h + 6h. Participation requires 100% attendance.

Independently and client-centeredly identify the key factors affecting sexual and reproductive health as well as women’s nursing care.
Search for, use, and evaluate evidence-based information, and utilize it in the development of sexual and reproductive health and women’s nursing care.
Act in accordance with ethical principles and develop both their own and others' ethical actions in nursing care.

Level 3
The student is able to:
Independently identify the key factors affecting sexual and reproductive health as well as women’s nursing care.
Justifiably search for, use, and evaluate evidence-based information in sexual and reproductive health and women’s nursing care.
Act independently in cooperation with those involved in the client’s care and services.
Act in accordance with ethical principles and evaluate their own and others' ethical actions in nursing care.

Level 1
The student is able to:
Under guidance, identify the key factors affecting sexual and reproductive health as well as women’s nursing care.
Search for and use evidence-based information in sexual and reproductive health and women’s nursing care.
Act under guidance in cooperation with those involved in the client’s care and services.
Act in accordance with ethical principles.
