Learning Outcomes
Having completed the course, the student has preparedness to dimension a motor based on the stresses caused by transient states. The student understands the thermal model of the motor and is able to apply protection and control devices in a variety of ways. The student has an ability to consider the impacts of various starting, braking and speed control methods when selecting a motor and the utilisation of a frequency converter in these situations.
Student's Workload
135 hours, of which 4 x4 hours laboratory assignments in addition to lectures. Two hours reserved for the exam.
Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
MATLAB and Simulink, Electric Machines, Power Electronics
Contents
Dimensioning of a motor in various short-term use situations, including starting and braking situations. Study of thermal model of squirrel cage motors, smart principles and features of smart protection devices in medium and low voltage applications. Implementation of safety solutions required by machine safety with safety classified control and protection components. Torque and current behaviour in starting and braking situations and principles of device selection for these situations using best applicable coupling methods. On part of power electronics applications, the comparison of various starting and speed control methods and their implementation for squirrel cage motors using various power electronics devices. Basics of selecting a frequency converter and a motor for various speed control drives and distributed energy production purposes. In laboratory assignments, introduction of most typical protection and control implementation dealt with in lectures.
