Learning Outcomes

The student gets acquainted with the prevailing manifestations of disability and being handicapped and with the principles, methods and legislation of working with the disabled. The student receives the competence for working with the disabled and their families.

Student's Workload

Altogether 80 hours, of which scheduled study approximately 33 hours.

Contents

Disability and being handicapped as a phenomenon. Status of the disabled and handicapped in the society. Experiencing and confronting disability. Disability and being handicapped as a crisis for the individual and family. Services for the disabled and special welfare services. Legislation related to the services for the disabled.

Lectures, exercises, study visits.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student has views on the social discussion concerning disability and he is able to see the effect of different research trends on the social discussion concerning disability.
Grade 3: The student knows how to apply his knowledge of the benefits of the disabled into client cases. The student knows how to apply the principles of unrestrictedness and involution in a practical level.
Grade 1-2: The student knows the most important forms of the support from the society for the disabled and the chronically ill, and recognizes their need for support in the society.

Assessment Methods

Participation in exercises and group work, written assignment or exam.
