Learning Outcomes

The student is familiar with the central phases in the history of nursing and nursing science. The student is familiar with the basics of philosophy and ethics. The student understands the principles of nursing. The student is able to implement core concepts of nursing ethics in nursing practice. The student implements evidence based practice both in nursing and in studies.

History of nursing and nursing science. Philosophical and ethical basics of nursing. Basics of nursing science. Idea and methods of evidence based nursing.

Grade 5
The student
- understands the central phases of early nursing, is able to discuss different developers of nursing and understands the role of Florence Nightingale to nursing and nursing science
- is able to discuss the major developments and developers of nursing in Finland.
- understands metatheories as a part of history of nursing science and is able to discus them.
- is able to implement core concepts of nursing ethics in practice.
- understands the ethical principles of nursing
- is able to analyze ethical problems in nursing individually
- is able to search, use and evaluate source material


Grade 3
The student
- is able to describe the central phases of early nursing, the classic developers of nursing and understands the role of Florence Nightingale to nursing
- understands the major developments of nursing in Finland.
- understands the role of metatheories as part of the history of nursing science
- is able to implement some central concepts of nursing ethics in practice as well as to discuss and write about ethical problems
- understands the ethical principles of nursing
- is able to search and use relevant source material

Grade 1
The student
- identifies some of the phases in early years of nursing, the classic developers of nursing and is familiar with the work of Florence Nightingale.
- identifies the major developments of nursing in Finland.
- identifies some of metatheories of nursing science
- identifies core concepts in nursing ethics as well as the ethical principles of nursing
- is able to discus ethical problems in a group of students
