Learning Outcomes

The student knows the key characteristics of the pharmacotherapy of the most common diseases in Finland and the special characteristics of the pharmacotherapy of elderly people. The student plans, implements, evaluates and documents the patient's pharmacotherapy and fluid treatment and blood transfusion.The student knows the prevention methods and follow-up methods of adverse events related to pharmacotherapy.The student is able to calculate medical dosage calculations without making any mistakes.

Basics of Pharmacotherapy

Contents

Pharmacotherapy of the most common diseases in Finland and of elderly people, Supervision and guidance of pharmacotherapy, patient safety. Planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of pharmacotherapy.
The ability to identify the risk situations related to pharmacotherapy and knowing how to act when such situations occur.Documentation of adverse events. Parenteral fluid treatment and blood transfusion and regulation concerning them.Practical exercises in pharmacotherapeutic skills . Medical dosage calculations, planning of the patient's fluid balance, implementation and follow-up,determination of the energy need in patients, making new solution.

Student is able to

- to describe how adverse events could be prevented and followed
- to calculate medical dosages without making any mistakes
Grade 3

Student is able to
-to describe the pharmacotherapy the most common diseases in Finland and the special characteristics of the pharmacotherapy of elderly people
- plan, implement, document and explain the patient´s pharmacotherapy and fluid treatment and blood transfusion
- to describe how adverse events could be prevented and followed and also use these methods
- to calculate medical dosages without making any mistakes

Grade 5

Student is able to
-to describe and evaluate with a patient-centered approach the pharmacotherapy the most common diseases in Finland and the special characteristics of the pharmacotherapy of elderly people
- plan, implement, evaluate and document the patient´s pharmacotherapy and fluid treatment and blood transfusion and is able to give some development suggestions
- to describe how adverse events could be prevented and followed and the student is also able to use these methods and evaluate how good well they work
- to calculate medical dosages without making any mistakes

Assessment Methods

Exam 80 %, learning assignments 20 %; numerical evaluation /grading (0-5). Ecercises and medical dosage calculation exam; evaluation pass/fail.
