Learning Outcomes

The student gets acquainted with mental health questions of the children and youth. The student learns how to understand the meaning of mental health in different sectors of life and vice versa. The student learns how to place mental health care as a continuous part of the development of children and young people. The student learns how to illustrate the threatening factors of the mental health of children and young people and understands the foundations of interfering with them.

Student's Workload

Altogether approx. 80 hours, 50 contact hours, written assignment 10 hours and independent study 20 hours. The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

The basic progress of developmental psychology should be revised before the course (for example Eriksson, Mahler). Acquaintance with the upper secondary course of the subject is a good foundation.

Concept of mental health and the factors of mental health. Effect of mental health to different sectors of life and vice versa. Central threatening factors and recognizing them. Promoting the mental health of children and young people. Factors unbalancing mental health. Most central mental health problems with children and young people and helping methods. Mental health services for children and youth.

Lectures, discussions, exercises and group work, written assignments.

Assessment Criteria

K5
Takes actively part in lectures and discloses his thoughts and experiences. Works independently with the subject and go into details more extensively than minimum requirements. The written assignment reflects more extensive individual thinking and applying what has been learned into practice. Understands the subject that has been taught and is able to apply them independently to different entities. Understands mental health as a basic concept and its extension and influences to different parts of life. Is able to recognize threatening factors to mental health in the operational environment and strives to have a preventative effect on them. Knows how to independently start mending actions in the sector of mental health care.
H (3-4)
Has participated in most of the lectures. The written assignment reflects understanding of the entity, knows how to apply parts of the learned subject into practice. Knows most of the taught subjects, independent applying still insufficient. Is able to extensively apply what has been learned to practice with guidance. Understands mental health as a basic concept and the effects of mental health to different sectors of life. Knows how to separate threatening factors and how to affect them with guidance. Is able to participate in mending actions in the sector of mental health with guidance.
T(1-2)
The know-how is unprofound, connecting things to an entity is insufficient. Many absences from lectures. Is not capable of applying the learned things to practice, and applying is formulaic without understanding the connections even when guided. The entity of the concept of mental health is partly incoherent. Is able to take part only in basic work without deeper insight of the entity even when guided.

Assessment Methods

Active participation in lectures (and other possible part-completions) approx. 50 %, written exam approx. 50 %.
