Learning Outcomes

The student gets acquainted with the core sections of the occupational functions in social services and receives the basic abilities of client work. The student knows how to work client-based and resourcefully preventing and alleviating the social problems of people from different cultural backgrounds. The student is familiar with the methods of special social services. The student knows how to work as a member of a multi-professional group. The student gets trained in guideing a group and knows how to utilize the possibilities of community work in welfare services in order to support the client.

Student's Workload

Altogether 162 h, of which 42 h lectures, client group guiding 10 h and individual work 110 h. The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

Process of occupational client work, occupational interaction, solution-based working methods and special social services. Co-operation, multiprofessional networking, forms and significance of social support, group guiding and team work.

Lectures, exercises, study visits, guiding client groups.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student knows how to evaluate a suitable working method in a situation of client work and how to plan the process of client work in a client-based way according to the situation. The student knows how to evaluate and develop the working customs and methods of community and group work to increase the client’s welfare. The student finds ways to strengthen the client’s resources and involution working in a multi-professional team.
Grade 3: The student knows how to apply the theory of client interaction into the exercises and guiding situations. The student knows how to resourcefully apply different working methods in the exercises and in client guidance situations. The student participates actively in the realization of the group assignment.
Grades 1-2: The student is familiar with the process of client work and knows how to define the working methods of different phases. The student recognizes his own needs for growth and strengths when working with clients. The student recognizes the ways of action in co-operation and understands the significance of social and peer support in client work. The student participates in the realization of the group assignment.

Assessment Methods

Collective group assignment (including guiding a group), learning diaries about reading and occupational growth.
