Learning Outcomes

The student gets acquainted with the effects of the multicultural development of the society on the work of social services. The student knows how to work client-based and resourcefully preventing and alleviating the social problems of people from different cultural backgrounds. The student understands and knows how to support and instruct an immigrant in the social integration to the society. The student gets acquainted with the individual, communal and social factors that affect the everyday lives of different clients. The student structures the processes that effect and prevent the emerging of problems and understands the effects of social problems on the lives of individuals and families. The student recognizes the risk situations of modern society that contribute to social exclusion. The student deepens his knowledge of social problems from the viewpoint of families and children and is familiar with the principles and central methods of child welfare work. The student is familiar with the methods of family-based work and gets trained in recognizing the families’ need for services. The student gets acquainted with the legislation of child welfare and is familiar with the organization of child welfare services.

Student's Workload

Altogether 243 h, lectures and guided group study 122 h, independent study 121 h. The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

First year study blocks and practical training period.

Contents

Being a refugee and circulation. Interaction between different cultures. Tolerance and attitudes. Racism. Immigrant as a client of social services. Immigration services. Changing situations and risk situations in life, social problems, poverty, social exclusion, excessive indebtedness, homelessness. Child welfare law, laws of child custody and visitation rights, preventative child welfare work, measures of support of open welfare, central methods of working.

Lectures, exercises, study visits, study circle, assignments, group guiding and learning assignment.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 1-2: The student recognizes the phenomena and challenges that are related to working with immigrants and knows how to describe different working methods for working with immigrants. The student knows how to name some social problems of the society and somehow perceive the factors that affect the starting of them and the consequences in the lives of individuals and families. The student knows the basic contents of the child welfare law and understands the goals of child welfare and family work and sees the socio-political position of child welfare.
Grade 3: The student knows how to apply the theory of multicultural work to different practical situations and to the exercises and the module assignment. The student is well familiar with the central social problems of the society and the factors that affect the starting of them. The student understands the effects of social problems in the lives of individuals and families. The student knows how to apply the learned skills by evaluating the necessity of child welfare and family work in theory. The student shows his capability to choose and compare different intervention models, is capable of seeing the realization forms of the structure of child welfare and legislation.
Grade 5: The student knows how to evaluate challenges of immigration work in the Vaasa area and nationwide and how to plan new working methods to develop multicultural work. The student knows how to theoretically analyze the central social problems of the society. The student understands extensively the reasons and consequences of social problems in the lives of individuals and families. The student knows how to critically examine the economical and social processes of the society that are on the background of social problems. The student masters the overall view of child welfare and family work today and knows how to evaluate and look to the current issues with critical reasons.

Assessment Methods

Active participation in contact hours, study visits and group guiding. Individual written assignment/exam. Written group work. Numeric evaluation: Group assignment and group guiding (50%), written assignments/exam (50%).
