Learning Outcomes

The student gets a conception of the significance of culture in human growth and development. The student understands the characteristics, values, norms and methods of different cultures. The student familiarizes himself with the central characteristics of different cultures, learns to appreciate them and examines intercultural communication. The student gets acquainted with the conditions of the client group that he has chosen. The student learns various methods to structure the client’s everyday life and life condition and gets trained in analyzing the connections between different factors.

Student's Workload

The work load altogether 81 hours of which 20 contact hours, 20 hours of web studies and 41 hours of independent study. The assesment of student's own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

Culture, Finnish culture, foreign cultures, intercultural communication. Supporting the survival in everyday life, way of living and life condition, control of life.

Lectures 20 h, group work, independent study, web studies 20 h.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 5: The student is capable of evaluating the effects of different cultures in the everyday life and control of life of people. The student is able to form a general view of the meaning of different factors in the work of social services.
Grade 3: The student knows how to apply the cultures, the control of life and concepts describing everyday life in different situations in life and in literature.
Grade 1: The student recognizes the special features of different cultures and is able to find differences in them. The student knows how to define concepts that relate to the way of living and to the control of life.

Group assignment. Individual assignment in web studies. Numeric evaluation.
