Learning Outcomes

The student masters the different phases of a scientific research project or development project. The student is able to examine phenomenon connected to his/own field both theoretically and practically. He/she understands the role of theoretical framework as a part of a research or development project. The student is able to choose a relevant and feasible research subject and formulate the research problem and questions. The student is able to search, choose and use relevant references and indicate them properly in the text. The student takes principles of research ethics into consideration. The student knows the basics of scientific reporting and can use language planning tools. The student is able to choose applicable research methods based on the research problem. He is able to design an empirical study taking the aims of the research and resources at hand into consideration. The student is able to create a measurement instrument suitable for data collection for student’s own project. The student knows central qualitative and quantitative research methods and is able to apply them in the research. The student is able to collect and analyze empirical data for his/her own study. The student is able to draw scientific conclusions based on the data and theoretical framework and assess the validity of his/her own research. The student is able to produce factual texts based on scientific writing norms. The student is able to apply his/her previous knowledge in planning, execution, and evaluation of a practical project within the student’s own field.

Contents

Research process, abstract and theoretical thinking, formulation of theoretical framework, research subject, problem and question, information search and source criticism, research ethics, research reporting. Introduction to philosophy of science, selection of research method based on research problem, designing an empirical study, central qualitative and quantitative methods and implementation of the method in own study. Empirical data collection, analysis and interpretation of empirical data, assessment of the validity of research. Writing and finishing a report. Implementation of a project based on client’s needs. Designing a project plan. Implementation of the project according to the plan. Critical evaluation of results based on the project plan.
