Learning Outcomes
The student will know the meaning and use of the IEC 61850 communication protocols (including GOOSE, MMS and SV) for different relevant manufacturers' equipment.
The student will understand the characteristics of the Ethernet network and its impact on substation communications.
The student will understand the importance of TCP & IP protocols and be proficient in their use between the substation and the SCADA system.
The student will understand the importance of Cyber Security in the data transfer and storage of substation data and other critical information.
The student will understand the principle of centralised protection of the medium voltage network and its difference from the distributed protection commonly used today.
Student's Workload
The student's workload is approximately 130h, of which
- 25h of contact teaching
- approximately 110h of independent study
1h of assessment of self-learning included in contact teaching
Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
Practical experience or studies in local area network technology and distribution network protection relays are useful but not essential.
