The descriptions shown below are for the academic year: 2024-2025

Learning Outcomes

This course gives a solid basis of digital electronics. The main focuses are on the separation between analogue and digital concept, the logic voltage levels, the Boolean algebra, the basics of logic gates and the combinational logic circuits. Other important subjects in this course are on the number systems, digital arithmetic, coding techniques and their use in digital electronic systems. The course will also introduce some basic digital circuits which are commonly used in digital System. The student will also learn about discrete digital IC components, learn how to read their datasheets, and understand their specifications and how to use them to design and implement digital systems. Finally the course will give and introduction to FPGAs and VHDL programming The course is composed of theory lectures and hand on laboratory exercises.

Student's Workload

135 h, containing 50 h of scheduled contact studies.

Contents

Logical reasoning in general. Number systems, binary arithmetic, codes and parity. Boolean algebra, Karnaugh map. The gates, combinational and sequential functions. Sequential structures. Digital components and their electrical properties. Basic circuit design and simulation. Digital technology and energy consumption. Laboratory sessions are mostly based on experimenting with discrete IC digital components and how to use them in designing and implementing digital electronic circuits. An introduction to FPGA development platforms and simulators will also be given to prepare the students to continuous with more advanced topics in digital systems.
