Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the student knows the fundamental concepts of modern telecommunication and masters the terminology of telecommunications. The focus is on the physical layer of the OSI model. Student can define basic concepts of data transmission such as signals and spectrum, bandwidth, attenuation and sampling. He/she knows the theoretical limits of communication due to channel restrictions (noise, bandwidth) and is able to calculate power and voltage ratios on a logarithmic scale. Student knows different transmission paths, especially optical transmission, encoding and modulation techniques. Student knows the most common Internet access networks. Student is also able to apply one’s knowledge and skills in practice and is familiar with the equipment, laboratory measurements and applications.

Student's Workload

135 h, which contains 50 h of scheduled contact studies.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Local Area Networks.

Contents

Signals and noise. Time and frequency domain and spectral analysis. Bandwidth and channel capacity and factors affecting the quality of data transmission. Optic fiber links. Sampling and quantization. Line coding. Error detection and correction. Basics of Modulations.
