Learning Outcomes

After the course, students gain a basic understanding how networks operate. Students learn about network components, how a network is structured, models and protocols. Students are familiar with the two major models used to plan and implement networks: OSI and TCP/IP. Students know the types of media to interconnect devices, the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, the principles and structure of IP addressing and the network operations. Students are able to build a simple LAN, verify and troubleshoot connectivity.

Student's Workload

135 h, which contains 50 h of scheduled contact studies.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Digital Electronics.

Contents

Basic components of a simple network, topologies and common types of networks. Protocols and Models: OSI and TCP/IP protocol models and standards. Ethernet concepts including Physical layer, Data link layer and Ethernet switching. Communication between networks: Network layer, Address resolution, IP addressing and basics of routing. Basics of IP Addressing Services: DNS, DHCP and NAT. Verify and troubleshoot connectivity with command line tools and Wireshark.
