Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, the student knows the fundamental networking concepts and technologies. Student is familiar with the two major models used to plan and implement networks: OSI and TCP/IP and gains an understanding of the layered and framed approach to networks. Student examines the TCP/IP layers in detail to understand their functions and services. The focus is on physical, data link (Ethernet) and network layers (IP). Student is familiar with local area network (LAN) devices and network addressing schemes, knows the structured cabling systems and architecture of LANs and is be able to design a small LAN. Student can troubleshoot networks with basic command line tools and Wireshark.
Student's Workload
135 h, which contains 70 h of scheduled contact studies.
Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
Digital Electronics.
Contents
Services of LAN. Digital transmission and performance testing of the twisted pair cable. Architecture of LAN; topologies, random access protocols, structured cabling system and active equipment. OSI and TCP/IP models and standards related to the models. Ethernet standard. TCP/IP network core services: name service, IP numbering and subnetwork masks, basics of routing and ARP. In addition basics of DHCP and NAT. Command line tools and Wireshark in troubleshooting.
