Learning Outcomes

The student becomes familiar with the basic phenomena and quantities of electrical engineering both in DC and AC circuits. The student learns the basic calculation methods and knows how to apply learned methods in the calculation of simple circuits.

Student's Workload

The total amount of student's work is 81 h, which contains 42 h of contact studies in the youth program and 30 h of contact studies in the adult program. The remaining time is used for individual studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

- Phenomena and quantities of static field, electric strength of insulator structures.
- The fundamentals of electricity: voltage, current, resistance and power
- Direct current (DC) circuits: voltage and current DC sources.
- Series, parallel and series-parallel circuits.
- Ohm’s, Kirchhoff’s laws and Thevenin and Norton theorems.
- Alternate current (AC) circuits.
- Capacitive circuits.
- Series and parallel RC circuit. Vector diagram. Impedance. Phase angle. Power vector diagram.
- Capacitive time constant, AC charge and discharge
- Electromagnetism and electromagnetic principles
- Inductive circuits. Series and parallel RL circuit. Vector diagram. Impedance. Phase Angle. Power vector diagram.
- Series RLC circuits and parallel RLC circuits
- Simulation of circuits using OrCad-Pspice.

Assessment Criteria

1: The student understands basic (around 40 %) course concepts and is capable of developing simple applications.
3: The student understands a considerable portion (around 60 %) of course concepts and is capable of developing applications with moderate number of functions.
5: The student understands most (around 90 %) course concepts and is capable of developing applications with advanced features.
