Learning Outcomes

After the course, the students know the architecture and operations of routers and switches in a small network. Students know the principles of Internet Protocol and Basics of Routing. Students know important Transport and Application layer protocols in the Internet. Students learn how to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches for advanced functionality. Basic security issues in the network layer and layers above will be also discussed.

16h of lectures and 24h of lab exercises.

Contents

Enhanced switching technologies such as Virtual LANs (IEEE802.q trunking) and Inter-VLAN routing. Internet Protocol versions 4 and 6. Address Resolution and Internet Control and Management Protocol (ICMP and ICMPv6). Static and Dynamic Routing (including inter-domain and intra-domain routing). TCP and UDP protocols and Application layer protocols using them. Application layer protocols such as HTTP, HTTPs, Websockets, SSH, certificates, multi-scope DHCP (relay agent).
