Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, the student knows the fundamental concepts of modern telecommunication and masters the terminology of telecommunications. The focus is on the physical layer of the OSI model. Student can define basic concepts of data transmission such as signals and spectrum, bandwidth, attenuation and sampling. He/she knows the theoretical limits of communication due to channel restrictions (noise, bandwidth) and is able to calculate power and voltage ratios on a logarithmic scale. Student knows different transmission paths, especially optical transmission, encoding, modulation and multiplexing techniques. Student knows the most common wired access networks (xDSL, DOCSIS, FTTx, PON etc.). Student is also able to apply one’s knowledge and skills in practice and is familiar with the equipment, laboratory measurements and applications.

Student's Workload

135 h, which contains 70 h of scheduled contact studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Local Area Networks.

Contents

Layered approach, standards organizations in telecommunications. Transmission paths and signals, time and frequency domain and spectral analysis. Bandwidth and channel capacity, and factors affecting the quality data transmission such as attenuation, filtering, noise, crosstalk, reflection, multi-path propagation, dispersion delays. Wired transmission paths, in particular optical data transmission, as well as antennas and radio wave propagation. Sampling and quantization. The digital information line coding and block coding. Modulation methods. Channelization, multicarrier modulation and spread spectrum.
