Learning Outcomes
The student will understand basis of strain and stress, Hooke's law, and the fundamentals of the function of rod structures, the student can analyse strains and stresses in the rod structures under actions, understand the principals of buckling, plastic behaviour, main stresses and basis of fracture mechanics of materials.

Contents
The basic concepts of deformation, strain and stress, Hooke's law. Fundamentals to analyse the rod structures. The evaluation criteria for strength and usefulness of the members. The influence of normal force, shear force, bending moment and torsion. Deflection curve. Buckling of columns, plastic bending, main stresses in plane and yield hypothesis.

Assessment Criteria
Grade 1: The student will accumulate one third of the maximum score in exams and the student will complete the assignments with grade 1.
Grade 3: The student will accumulate two thirds of maximum score in the exams and will complete the assignment with grade 3.
Grade 5: The student will accumulate the maximum score in the exam and completes the assignments with grade 5.
