Learning Outcomes

The master’s thesis is a working life based development project, which compounds the core of the studies (30 ects) for the diploma. The thesis can be a research, project or a functional development project. The aim of the thesis in UAS (university of applied sciences) master’s studies is to develop and show the ability to apply research information and use chosen methods to classify and solve the problems in working life and the preparedness for independent challenging expert work (Act 2005/423, 7a§). The thesis of UAS master’s degree emphasizes the student’s, UAS`s and working life’s cooperation. The thesis is a research and development work which serves the working life and has a clear practical character and a task in regional development. In the UAS master’s thesis the central point is in applying the theoretical knowledge, innovativeness and deepening the professional expertise.

The student should be able to act as a specilist in his/her own field, as a developer of project and project manager. The student should know the main steps of doing research and development work and understand the differences between qualitative and quantitative research and be familiar with the most common research methods. The student should be able to choose a suitable research and/or development method for conducting his/her thesis work.

Student's Workload

Total workload of the thesis 800 hours student work of which scheduled studies will be at least 40 hours. Autonomous studies max 760 hrs.

The student has the responsibility of the advancement and the success of the thesis related to the project management in the context of his/her own workplace and work.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Thesis seminars and individual guidance. The students start their thesis work by drawing up and presenting the thesis project plan in the end of the spring period of the first study year. During the second study year the progress of the thesis will be reported in thesis seminars monthly. Lectures related the research methods and research report writing will be provided in the beginning of the thesis period.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment grades 1 (satisfactory) - 5 (excellent) .

Assessment Methods

Written report and oral presentation.
