Learning Outcomes
The student will be introduced to the most common fieldbuses used in the industry. She will learn how to create a local, as well as a distributed system using both the internet and a fieldbus network. The student will also learn the components used in a fieldbus network.

81 h, which contains 42 h of scheduled contact studies.
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Local Area Networks, Principles of Telecommunications, Sensor and Control Technology.
Contents
The student will design a networked embedded system using standard industrial protocols, such as Modibus and Profibus. The system will be connected to the internet. The student will learn how to build a network, and she will study the related cyber security issues. Classification of industrial communication systems, their types, topologies and characteristics. Protocols (FMS, DP and PA). Fieldbus access methods. Components and devices in a fieldbus network. Applications of profibus in some common industrial control and automation systems.

Assessment Criteria
Grade 5: The student is able to set up a distributed system with the maximum possible number of devices that communicate using a fieldbus, such as Profibus.
Grade 3: The student is able to apply the contents of the course and solve the laboratory assignments.
Grade 1: The student can define a fieldbus and understands its characteristics, type and structure. The student has the ability to make a differences between an industrial data network and the internet.
