Learning Outcomes
The student learns the basic concepts and operations of probability calculations and statistics. (S)he can build a sample using random numbers, and understands the uncertainty issues related with techniques used in making a survey. The student can manipulate statistical data with a software and is able to present results of her/his statistical analysis in a graphical manner. (S)he is also able to interpret statistical graphs and diagrams, and can calculate statistical key figures related with a given sample. The student can analyse relationships between different kinds of statistical variables. (S)he understands the difference between an empirical and a theoretical distribution, and can estimate key figures of a distribution. The student learns the rules of probability calculations, and knows the fundamental importance of probability studies on the relevance of statistical data. (S)he learns to use the most important probability distributions with a computer software, and will learn to run basic statistical tests and to calculate confidence intervals.

The total amount of student's work is 54 h, containing 28 h of scheduled contact studies.

Contents
How to collect, handle and graphically represent a statistical sample, and how to draw conclusions from that. How to calculate indices. The mathematical rules of probability calculation. Different kinds of distributions of probability. Regression lines and the coefficient of correlation. How to estimate parametres. Condidence intervals, tests for the average value, applications related with the specific field of engineering.

Assessment Criteria
Grade 1: The student knows those subjects of the course, which are necessary for the forthcoming studies and working life.
Grade 3: The student is well-abled to utilize the course contents.
Grade 5: The student is able to apply creatively the contents of the course.
Assessment Methods
Exercises and examination. The student is required to perform at least one quarter of the homework exercises. All the given computer-related exercises must be handed in by the end of the course.
