Learning Outcomes
The student understands the modeling methods of electrical power systems. The student builds simple simulation models using a transient simulator software package. The student gets a view on possibilities of modern simulation tools in modeling electrical switching phenomena
Student's Workload
Total work load of the course 82 h
Scheduled studies 42 h
Autonomous studies 40 h
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.
Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses
Sähköverkot, sähkölaitokset, suuntaajatekniikan perusteet
Contents
By building simulation models the students will understand the operation of electric power system, synchronous generator and squirrel cage motors during transient situations. As separate projects, simple systems are modeled and their operation simulated All projects will be reported.
Recommended or Required Reading and Other Learning Resources/Tools
Kimmo Kauhaniemi, Olavi Mäkinen: PSCAD simulointiohjelma Käytön perusteet. (handout) Instructions for exercises. Material available on Moodle.
Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods
Simulations models are designed using PSCAD software. The operations of the midels is tested and required calculations made. Reports are drawn up of the projects.
Assessment Criteria
1: The student is able, with quidance, to utilise the calculation methods learnt during simulation of electric power systems.
3: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during simulation of electric power systems independently.
5: The student is able to utilise the calculation methods learnt during simulation of electric power systems independently and combine the knowledge with previously learnt in various context
Assessment Methods
Assessment of reports 100%.
