Learning Outcomes

The student knows various ways to build a foundation for a house, design principles and methods of excavations and substructure. The student knows the most important work methods and quality control employed in foundation engineering. The student is able to perfom basic calculations in carrying capacity design, stability analysis, settlement and earth pressure measurements. The student is bale to design and dimension frost protection and drainage structures.

- of which 70 scheduled studies and
- 65 hours of autonomous studies
The assessment of student’s own learning 1 h is included in contact lessons.

Contents

Regulations and instructions concerning foundation engineering. Carrying capacity, stability, settlement and earth pressure calculations. Design and support of excavations. Work methods in foundation engineering and quality control. Drainage and frost insulation in foundations.

Jääskeläinen Raimo: Pohjarakennuksen perusteet, Tammertekniikka 2003 and other material announced by the teacher.

Mode of Delivery / Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

Lectures, exercises, assignment and laboratory exercises. The study unit is related to Concrete Structures study unit and foundation design in the detached house project.

Assessment Criteria

Grade 1: The student knows the contents of the study unit that are relevant in working life.
Grade 3: The student is able to utilise the information and skills learnt during the study unit.
Grade 5: The student is able to utilise and apply the information and skills learnt during the study unit.

Assessment Methods

Exam, exercises, laboratory reports and assignment.
