Learning Outcomes

The student will understand the fundamentals of applied stress analysis, will be able to set up a stiffness matrix, create the model using an FEA-program, solve stresses and displacements. The student can use an FEA-program to design a frame structure according to steel structure codes.
He/She knows the basic principles of modeling plate- and shell structures.

Student's Workload

Total work load of the course: 81 h
- of which scheduled studies: 40 h
- of which autonomous studies: 41 h

Prerequisites / Recommended Optional Courses

Statics, Strength of Materials

Contents

The basics of finite element method, finite element analysis procedure and types of finite elements, creating a FE model, meshing, applying loads and boundary conditions and faults in initial informations, testing the model, analyzing the stress and deflection, exercises to use FEA software in the design of frame structures according to codes Eurocode 1 and -3.
Principles of plate and shell modeling, differencies between beam and plate models.
