Learning Outcomes

The student will further improve his/her English language and communication skills with written academic English in main focus. The student will reflect on, analyse and recognize his/her current English language and grammar skills in order to be able to take an active part in improving and refining his/her skills. In addition to paying attention to grammar and vocabulary use, the student will also focus on writing strategies that are characteristic for English texts on academic subjects, i.e. models for how to develop a clear and logical academic text, the structure and style of a research paper and the conventions and style of academic English in his/her discipline. In addition the student will become familiar with how to avoid plagiarism and other non-academic behaviour.

Student's Workload

The total amount of student's work is 81 h, containing 42 h of scheduled contact studies.

Communication Skills.

Contents

The importance of good communication skills in various situations in working life, intercultural meetings, text development, professional terminology, features of academic writing in English, the academic word list.

The teacher gives information about the material needed at the beginning of the course.

Lectures, work-shops, group work and individual assignments (written and oral)

Assessment Criteria

Grade 1: The student is able to produce various reports and texts but not altogether accurately or using appropriate style.
Grade 3: The student is able to produce various reports and texts which are mostly to the point and of appropriate style and format.
Grade 5: The student is able to produce reports and texts which are excellent in content, format and style.

Assessment Methods

The student must fulfill the 80 % minimum attendance requirements at contact learning to be assessed. Assignments completed in time, contact session activity to be continuously assessed and a written examination on scale 0 - 5.
