Learning Outcomes

The student knows the concepts of urban ecology and biodiversity. The student understands how these topics are connected to land use planning and can apply urban ecology research in planning. The student is familiar with the land use planning system and understands the importance of survey data as part of planning. The student can create a land use plan that supports urban ecology and meets existing legislative requirements.

Contents

Definitions of concepts. Basics and research of urban ecology. Legislation guiding planning: Land Use and Building Act and Nature Conservation Act. Nature conservation areas. Built environments and landscape structure theory. Cultural environments and valuable landscape areas. Natural values in built environments. Natural management of stormwater. Green infrastructure and ecosystem services. Regional ecological planning and nature-based solutions.
